Lacquering and oiling

Most wooden floor coverings — parquet — must be finished after installation: sanded and lacquered or oiled.

Sanding and lacquering parquet

Some parquet floors require additional treatment after installation: sanding and varnishing or oiling.

We can sand: newly installed parquet and old parquet.

Parquet blocks are made in such a way that after installation, and before protective finishes (lacquer, oil, wax) are applied, they must be thoroughly sanded. The surface of newly installed or old parquet is unclean and uneven.

By sanding and vacuuming we therefore level and clean the parquet surface. The flatness of the sanded surface is a very important factor that affects the further treatment of the parquet and, of course, the final appearance of the lacquered or oiled surface.

Lacquering and oiling wooden floor coverings

In the past, a single type of lacquer was used. Today a different technique is applied: first a base lacquer is applied, and only then the finishing lacquers.

Applying the base lacquer

The reasons for using a base coat are:

  • preparing an even surface,
  • closing the pores in the wood,
  • isolating the surface,
  • good adhesion of the lacquer to the surface,
  • lower lacquer consumption.

Types of base lacquers: one-component — polyurethane or water-based, two-component — polyurethane. The type of base (primer) lacquer is chosen according to the wood species being treated.

Applying the finishing lacquer

After one coat of base lacquer, the finishing lacquer is applied 2 to 3 times, depending on the type of lacquer.

There are several types of finishing lacquers:

  • acid-curing lacquers,
  • polyurethane lacquer, and
  • ecological lacquers — water-based lacquers.

Lacquering procedures

  • Lacquering with polyurethane lacquer: 1st coat with polyurethane base lacquer, 2nd and 3rd coat with polyurethane finishing lacquer, all applied with a roller. The coat must always be applied in a thin layer.
  • Lacquering with acid-curing lacquer: 1st coat of acid-curing base lacquer, 2 to 3 coats of acid-curing top lacquer, all applied with a roller.
  • Lacquering with ecological lacquers: 2 coats of base lacquer applied with a trowel and 2 coats of ecological top lacquer applied with a roller.
  • Optimal cycle: 1 coat of primer lacquer with a roller, 1 coat of gel with a trowel, 2 coats of top lacquer with a roller.

Precautions when lacquering

  • read the lacquer's instructions for use carefully,
  • observe the warnings and notices on the packaging,
  • clean the surface before lacquering,
  • acclimatise the lacquer to room temperature before lacquering,
  • check the temperature, relative air humidity and moisture content of the wood.

Oiling

Oiling and waxing parquet has been gaining popularity recently. Parquet protected with oil has a more natural appearance. There are colourless and coloured oils. By oiling with coloured oils, the base colour of the parquet can be changed.

For oiling, the parquet must be prepared in the same way as for lacquering. If a colourless oil is applied, this is done 2 to 3 times, followed by a coat of wax. When changing the colour tone, coloured oil is applied once, colourless oil twice, and then the wax.
